If you’ve ever wondered how family photos get that beautiful, warm, golden glow, the secret is often golden hour!
As an Auckland family photographer, this is one of my favourite times to photograph families outdoors. The soft evening light, quieter beaches and relaxed atmosphere create the perfect setting for natural family photography that captures genuine connection.
And yes, it might mean letting the kids stay up past bedtime for one night — but I promise, it’s worth it!
The magic of golden hour
Golden hour is the time just before sunset, when the sunlight becomes softer, warmer and more flattering. Unlike harsh midday sunshine, it creates gentle shadows, beautiful skin tones and that dreamy, timeless look I love.
Whether we're exploring an East Auckland beach, wandering through a park or watching the children splash at the water's edge, the evening light makes everything feel a little more magical.
Quieter beaches, happier little people
One of the best things about an evening family photoshoot in Auckland is that popular beaches and parks are often quieter as the day winds down.
With more room to explore, children can run, play, collect shells and enjoy time together without feeling like they need to stand still and smile at the camera.
My approach to outdoor family photography is relaxed and child-led. Some of the most beautiful images happen in between the posed moments — the cuddles, giggles, sandy feet and spontaneous hugs.
If you're wondering where to book your session, I've shared some of my favourite spots in my guides to the best beaches for outdoor family photos in Auckland and the best family photography locations in East Auckland.
Is a later bedtime worth it?
I know an evening session can feel daunting when you have young children and an established bedtime routine. But sometimes, making an exception for one night creates something truly special.
There's no pressure for your children to behave perfectly. As a registered teacher with over 15 years of experience working with children, I know little ones have their own personalities, energy levels and ideas!
We'll keep things fun, relaxed and natural, allowing your family to enjoy the experience together. And if you're preparing your little ones for their first session, take a look at my guide on how to prepare your toddler for family photos.
Not sure what everyone should wear? My guide to what to wear for your Auckland family photoshoot will help you choose soft, earthy colours that complement the beautiful evening light.
