How to Prepare Your Toddler for Family Photos

Toddlers can be wonderfully unpredictable, and it's completely normal to feel a little nervous before a family photography session. The first thing I want you to know is this: I've seen it all! After working with children for over 15 years, I can confidently say that nothing will surprise me. There is absolutely no expectation for your little ones to sit still, smile on command, or behave "perfectly"—they're simply being kids, and that's exactly what I love to capture.

There are a few simple things you can do beforehand to help our session run as smoothly as possible. If you can, try to book your session for a time when your children are usually at their happiest and most rested. Avoid scheduling it straight after a busy day, birthday party, or another big event if possible, as tired little ones often find it harder to engage. Beforehand, ensure that your kiddies are well fed, rested and toileted. If possible, having nap time right before our session can really help. When dressing your toddler, dress them for comfort over everything else. Restrictive and unfamiliar clothing can add a whole new layer of sensory over-stimulation. Bringing along a few easy, mess-free snacks and water is always a great idea too, they can work wonders for a quick energy boost if needed!

Before our session, chat to your children about how we're going to have some fun together and that a new friend is coming to take some photos. You might like to look through family photos together, watch a few videos of family photo sessions, or even play "photographer" at home. The more relaxed and exciting it feels, the better.

During our session, let your children simply be themselves. There's no need to ask them to sit still, look at the camera, or say "cheese". Instead, I'll gently guide your family through playful prompts and interactions while getting to know your little ones. Think tickles, playing tag, collecting flowers and going on treasure hunts. As a qualified teacher, I'm very comfortable chatting with children, building trust, and helping them feel at ease.

My goal is for your session to feel more like a fun family adventure than a formal photoshoot. I do recommend leaving tablets and phones at home or tucked away, as they can be difficult for little ones to switch away from. However, if your baby or toddler has a favourite comfort toy or a small special item they love, you're more than welcome to bring it along.

Bonus tip for the parents - leave your smart watches, wallets and phones behind, they add clunky shapes in pockets and never photograph well! If you forget - no stress - I can keep these things in my camera bag during the session.
